After over 55 successful years the annual west coast charity herring sale has been cancelled, including the one scheduled to take place this Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Westminster Quay dock.

Federal government red tape preventing the issuing of the charity licence is to blame for the cancellation. With all future herring sales in doubt, David Lane, Environment Director for the UFAWU-CAW, hopes that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans can find some way for the charity sale can be continued in future years.

Over the last half century the sale has provided herring for thousands of British Columbians while supporting many charities including the CKNW Orphans Fund, the Vancouver Aquarium and the T. Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation. The T. Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation has used the funds from the herring sale in past years to promote the protection of fish, fish habitat and ocean health. The CKNW Orphans Fund used the funds primarily for programs for disabled children.

The Foundation would like to thank the thousands of people who have supported this event in the past. A special thanks goes out to the many individuals that helped out at our partner organizations: the Canadian Fishing Company, United Fishermen and Allied Workers - CAW Union and CKNW.
