Hydroelectric dams have left a legacy of reduced water flows that have seriously impacted salmon stocks. New independent power projects pose new threats.
Hydroelectric power projects in B.C. have reduced water flows, changed
water flow regimes and altered fish habitat. Dozens of salmon runs have
been compromised by B.C. Hydro's overuse of water.
B.C. Hydro
de-regulation policies have launched hundreds of independent power
proposals. Private power producers using run-of-the-river generators
may seem like a good alternative to large-scale dams. But there are few
guidelines on smaller streams and even small power projects can
negatively impact water flows and fish habitat.
We were leaders
in the fight against Alcan's Kemano Completion project on the Nechako
River, a successful 12 year campaign that resulted in no increased
water extraction from this important tributary of the Fraser River.
We will continue to monitor private power proposals and advocate for healthy water flows for fish.
